A Thousand Words, il blog internazionale di Kodak, ha ospitato un mio post di ricordo dell’esperienza sudafricana. Posto qui la versione italiana dell’intervento.

Qualche giorno fa sono stato a Cape Point, sulla punta dell’Africa. Davanti a me avevo solo l’Oceano Atlantico, che mi raccontava la lunga storia del continente. Dietro di me, un intero popolo affacciato, per un mese, sul resto del mondo. È stata una sensazione unica: di qui il silenzio del mare, di là il rombo della festa e io, nel mezzo, a osservare.

Quella delle vuvuzela è una metafora azzeccata per raccontare il tenero entusiasmo dei sudafricani in queste settimane: li presenta in una delle loro migliori attitudini, quella al ritmo, alla risata e alla musica. Per loro questo è un mese speciale: a giugno si ricorda l’avvio della prima presidenza di Nelson Mandela, un uomo che ha segnato il passo per un cambiamento fondamentale, alla conquista di un Sudafrica migliore. Ora questa festa calcistica unisce un po’ di più i Sudafricani, nello spirito: lavorare attorno a un progetto comune e ambizioso contribuisce a rafforzare l’identità di un Paese, in particolare quando ha alle spalle una storia come quella del Sudafrica.

Una unica melodia è alla base dei sorrisi delle persone che ho incontrato qui: la contagiosa gioia di vivere, che non è una roba banale. Da Johannesburg a Cape Town, dagli stadi alle township. Ho trovato onesto che i problemi di questo Paese non fossero camuffati da qualcos’altro: ci sono ma c’è una generale consapevolezza che piccoli cambiamenti sono in atto. Ho visitato una township, Mfuleni, dove gruppi di donne e di giovani lavorano per estendere il diritto all’educazione, base per un Paese solido e migliore. La strada è lunga, ma qui si lotta per una maggiore eguaglianza fra tutte le classi sociali. E se è il calcio a portare un contributo di visibilità, ben venga.

La mia permanenza qui mi ha mostrato quanto l’Africa possa essere bellissima e feroce allo stesso tempo: date un’occhiata alle foto! Per questo dico che l’Africa è un leone. Voglio tornarci. È successo: mi sono innamorato del Sudafrica. Spero che gli scatti di noi blogger facciano innamorare anche voi di questo fantastico Paese.

English version – On top of South African beat

A couple of days ago I was in Cape Point. Before my eyes the Atlantic Ocean was portraying the story of the continent. Behind me, people gazing, for a month, at the rest of the world. It was an inexplicable sensation: here, the sea’s stillness, there the feast’s rumble and I, in the middle, staring at it all.

That of vuvuzelas is the right metaphor to represent the South African innocent ethusiasm of these weeks, it highlights one of their most characteristic features: their inclination to rhythm, laughter and music. This is a special month for them: June is in fact the month when Mandela’s first presidency started, a difficult journey which led to the country’s greater self-awareness. This football event draws South Africans closer in the spirit: for working together for an ambitious project does indeed strengthen a country’s identity, especially that one of a country with such history.

One single melody lies beneath the smiles of the people I have met here: a contagious joie de vivre, which is far from being banal. From Johannesburg to Cape Town, from the stadiums to the townships. I found a certain honesty in not wanting to disguise the country’s problems behind a mask. They are there, as well the general awareness that little steps are being taken. I visited a township, Mfuleni, where a group of women and young people work together in order to extend the right to Education, the base for a solid and better country. There still is a long way to go, but here a battle is still being fought for greater equality among the different social classes. And if football is the way to draw some interest and to give the country some visibility, then be it.

My stay here showed me how beautiful yet wild Africa can be: check out the pictures. This is why I am saying Africa is a lion. I definitely want to come back. It has happened, I have fallen in love with South Africa. I hope the bloggers’ photos will make all of you fall in love with this marvellous country too.
